DAYTONA BEACH – Father Lopez golfer Elizabeth Carvajal hasn’t forgotten how her team finished near the bottom in the 9-Hole Challenge her freshman and sophomore years. 

The painful memory lived on in the senior’s mind through the next few years as her team returned to the event. In Carvajal’s junior year, the Green Wave finished fourth, a big jump from the previous years. The little 1A school – often the only one at the event – was starting to make some noise. 

Then, two weeks ago, the little engine that could, did. Father Lopez knocked off bigger schools DeLand, Matanzas and even Seabreeze to win the 9 Hole Challenge at Crane Lakes in Port Orange, edging the runner-up and favorites, the Sandcrabs, by a single stroke. For the four seniors on the team, the win felt unbelievable.
